Delivery Day!
My First Mother's Day!

8/12/12

My Testimony (Part 2)

We got to the hospital a couple of minutes before five o’clock. We didn’t do the hospital tour while I was pregnant, but my hubby made sure he knew his way around the hospital and was clear on parking. He is a true project manager in every sense of the word, so he hates not being prepared. He made sure I had my hospital bags ready to go about a month before my due date and all my pre-registration forms completed online.  We checked into our room and our journey to delivery began.

My doctor came into the room to check on me and also begin the process. I was scheduled to come in to the hospital on the 3rd when I went in for my forty weeks check up if the baby didn’t come before then, so labor would be induced.  I was also told at my forty weeks appointment what would be done when I went in and how things would likely play out even though there is no telling with delivery. I did my research prior to going in and read about all the things we talked about so I was well educated. I love surprises but I sure as heck didn’t want one in this situation. My doctor first of all checked to see if I was dilated, I was 0cm and 0% effaced. She then inserted Cervidil ─ a vaginal insert that thins out the cervix and also helps it to begin contracting and dilating. She let me know that it would be taken out at 5a.m. before I was transferred to the labor and delivery room. The room they had us in was just an overnight room.  After the doctor left the room, we had our first visitors! My mother-in-law and my husband’s niece Izabella (Izi), came in bearing gifts and food. They brought me Ayamashe ─ a ridiculously spicy stew that is just as ridiculously delicious, some clothes for the baby, and a stuffed animal that came in really handy. We enjoyed our time together chatting and laughing and then the nurse came in to cut short my joy. She had needles! I cannot put into words how much I HATE shots. I think that was the worst thing I dealt with during my pregnancy. I detested those darn shots! I cried every time I had to get one. I’m the last person anyone wants to watch get a shot, last person. The nurse got my IV started and attached me to the heart rate monitor. The pain from getting hooked up to the IV was the worse yet! BTW I hated the IV being in my arm! It was the most uncomfortable feeling and I looked forward to when it would be taken out.

Our visitors left but we were expecting more before the end of the night but they took their sweet time. We talked and watched TV and right before midnight, my royal family stopped by ─ my mom, sisters, brother and darling nephew! They spent a short time and then prayed with us before they left.  My hubby gave me a kiss and got on his oh so comfy recline-able chair couch. Lol. I didn’t sleep for long because by 1:30a.m I was in pain. It came from nowhere almost but it came on strong. I called in my nurse and told her I was ready for my painkiller medication. Mind you, they had asked me several times prior to me calling if I wanted the medication and I kept saying I was great and my pain level was zero! At about 2:00a.m she came in and shot the medication up my IV. Let me tell you about this medication. I don’t remember the name, but I understood Michael Jackson for about an hour of my life. I mean that medication left me feeling good boi! Lol… I felt like I was floating, day dreaming, laughing, sleeping ─ all at the same damn time! It was short lived though because it wore off after an hour. I was given another dose at 3:00a.m but it wasn’t as strong (boo!) because it was almost time to take out the Cervidil and get transferred to the L&D room.

My doctor came in the room at about 5:30a.m. She took out the Cervidil and checked me. I was 100% effaced but only about 1-2cm dilated. I was so disappointed even though she told me that it was an excellent start. I got out of bed to take a shower and at this point, my contractions were coming on strong. I sang through it all though while in the shower. When I got out, my hubby and I both gave each other a look of joy. We were going to meet our little girl today!

Darn IV!
